The obvious color associations with minimalist style are white, black, grey and their various shades. The more adventurous minimalists can throw in some navy, pink, or beige.
But what about bolder colors? Orange, burgundy, or vibrant blue? Are they by principle irreconcilable with minimalist fashion?
I think not.
I have always been the “safe” minimalist style lover. My color palette is somewhat limited and I don’t have a problem with that. I’d always rather go for interesting cuts or details over colors to make a statement.
Lately, though, I found myself being inspired by a variety of colors. Summer vibes, maybe? And while I don’t think I’ll fill my wardrobe with lots of colorful items anytime soon, it’s also great to step out of the style comfort zone once in a while and experiment a little.
Here are my three favorite tips on how to add a little color to a classic minimalist style.
How to add color to your minimalist wardrobe
Accessories
Probably the easiest way to add some color to a minimalist outfit: try colorful bags, shoes, scarves, or some statement jewelry. The even braver fashionistas can also try adding more or combining different colors.
One statement item
This one works especially well in the spring or fall and with layering – donning a colorful coat over a simple monochrome outfit or having a colored item as a medium layer, peeking out under a simpler color palette. That doesn’t mean it cannot work in the summer – a statement skirt, pants, or even a dress paired with more classic minimalist pieces can be just as eye-catching.
Makeup
Colorful makeup is my dark horse in this list. It’s not a completely obvious thing to do and does require some special attention. We are aiming for stylish high-fashion vibes after all, and not for a spot at the circus.
The thing is, minimalist style does not necessarily or only have to mean bare and natural. A gorgeous, well-done colorful makeup is an awesome accessorize for an otherwise minimalist style. It’s all about playing up on contrasts.
You can go for a more subtle effect (blended colors or a bold, but still natural lip) or more avant-garde (with bolder eye-shadows, unique lines) – whatever the occasion and your taste permit.
Try rediscovering the playful nature of makeup and regard it as an essential part of your fashion and style. Try different things, colors, and shapes and pair it with whites, blacks, and monochromes. Summer nights and vacations are especially great times for this kind of experimenting.
My choices this summer: orange, coral, terracotta, and even some red eye shadows.

At the moment I’m really trying to embrace this and I’m having a lot of fun injecting some colour into my normally neutral palette of a wardrobe. My favourite thing at the moment is using accessories to add a pop of colour 🙂
